Correlation between the sub-structure parameters and the manufacturing technologies of metal threads in historical textiles using X-ray line profile analysis

Micro-structure can talk when documentation is missing. In ancient Roman or medieval periods, kings, queens, or just rich people decorated their clothes or even their horse covers richly with miniature jewels or metal threads. The origin or the fabrication techniques of these ancient threads is often unknown. Thirteen thread samples made of gold or gilt silver manufactured during the last sixteen hundred years are investigated for the micro-structure in terms of dislocation density, crystallite size, and planar defects. In a few cases, these features are compared with sub-structure of similar metallic threads prepared in modern, twentieth century workshops. The sub-structure is determined by X-ray line profile analysis, using high resolution diffractograms with negligible instrumental broadening. On the basis of the sub-structure parameters, we attempt to assess the metal-threads manufacturing procedures on samples stemming from the fourth century A.D. until now.     

On families of quadratic surfaces having fixed intersections with two hyperplanes

We investigate families of quadrics all of which have the same intersection with two given hyperplanes. The cases when the two hyperplanes are parallel and when they are nonparallel are discussed. We show that these families can be described with only one parameter and describe how the quadrics are transformed as the parameter changes. This research was motivated by an application in mixed integer conic optimization. In that application, we aimed to characterize the convex hull of the union of the intersections of an ellipsoid with two half-spaces arising from the imposition of a linear disjunction.     

Effect of atmospheric pressure variations on the <Superscript>222</Superscript>Rn activity concentration in the air of a wine cellar

We have measured the variation of atmospheric pressure and of ²²²Rn activity concentration in the air of a wine cellar with an AlphaGAURD type ionization chamber radon monitor. We have found that the ²²²Rn activity concentration varies inversely with pressure. To explain this behavior we have done model calculations. We have compared the results of model calculations with the results of experimental measurements, and we have found that the model is capable to reproduce some part of the variation of ²²²Rn activity concentration.

Hausdorff continuity of approximate solution maps to parametric primal and dual equilibrium problems

In this paper, we consider parametric primal and dual equilibrium problems in locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces. Sufficient conditions for the approximate solution maps to be Hausdorff continuous are established. We provide many examples to illustrate the essentialness of the imposed assumptions. As applications of these results, the Hausdorff continuity of the approximate solution maps for optimization problems, variational inequalities and fixed-point problems are derived.     

Differentiable Distance Spaces

The distance function \({\varrho(p, q) ({\rm or} d(p, q))}\) of a distance space (general metric space) is not differentiable in general. We investigate such distance spaces over \({\mathbb{R}^n}\), whose distance functions are differentiable like in case of Finsler spaces. These spaces have several good properties, yet they are not Finsler spaces (which are special distance spaces). They are situated between general metric spaces (distance spaces) and Finsler spaces. We will investigate such curves of differentiable distance spaces, which possess the same properties as geodesics do in Finsler spaces. So these curves can be considered as forerunners of Finsler geodesics. They are in greater plenitude than Finsler geodesics, but they become geodesics in a Finsler space. We show some properties of these curves, as well as some relations between differentiable distance spaces and Finsler spaces. We arrive to these curves and to our results by using distance spheres, and using no variational calculus. We often apply direct geometric considerations.
